036 Circumstances are Neutral
This week on the podcast Heidi addresses one of the biggest obstacles to managing our thoughts: understanding that circumstances are neutral. Our brains want to reject this idea because it is easier to believe that things happen and there is nothing we can do about it, but that is not true. While we cannot always control our circumstances, we can control what we make them mean and this is the greatest news of all.
Circumstances are facts. They are not positive or negative. It is our thoughts about the circumstances that give them meaning. Our thoughts are always optional. Therefore, we can choose to feel however we want about any circumstance.
This knowledge gives us power over our lives and puts us in the drivers seat. We can choose when we want to feel negative emotions and when we would rather experience the more positive emotions. There are times when negative emotions are necessary and appropriate and we will definitely want to experience those feelings, but we always have another option available when we are ready.
You are in control of your own life and that starts by understanding that circumstances are neutral.
